Coleman is Lancashire-born. Coleman graduated from Arnold School Blackpool, where she received straight A grades for all of her A-levels. Discussing her role on Emmerdale Coleman revealed that she regrets not having had a typical University experience. Steven Moffat, the producer of Doctor Who confirmed in a 21st March 2012 press meeting that Coleman will play Matt Smith's companion following the departure of Karen Gillan left. Moffat chose her for the role because she was the most well alongside Smith and was able to talk more quickly than Smith. The actress was nominated two "Daytime Emmy Awards" as the character she was playing as well as having the opportunities to express her artistic talents.
